A 75,000 year-old stone calendar - In the cradle of humankind.

adams calendar

A new discovery of an ancient circular monolithic stone calendar site in Mpumalanga has proven to be at least 75,000 years old, pre-dating any other structure found to date. Southern Africa holds some of the deepest mysteries in all of human history. What we are told is that at around 60,000 years ago the early humans migrated from Africa and populated the rest of the world.

Who were these first humans? What did they do? And where did they disappear to?

It estimated that there are well over 1,000,000 (one million) ancient stone ruins scattered throughout the mountains of southern Africa. Various tools and artefacts that have been recovered from these ruins show a long and extended period of settlement that spans well over 200,000 years.

Many of these artefacts that include, coins, carvings, swords, symbols, head rests, bowls, statues and more, show that virtually every ancient culture was present here in southern Africa at some point in history. This includes the Sumerians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Dogon, Dravidians, and even the Incas. The most spectacular examples of these ancient ruins lie between Machadodorp and Waterval Boven, Mpumalanga. Modern historians have been speculating about the origins of these ruins, often calling them ‘cattle kraal of little historic importance’.

Book your place to tour Adam's Calendar

The truth of the matter is that closer scientific inspection shows that we actually know very little about these spectacular ancient ruins. While many have been adapted by more recent arrivals or inhabitants over the past 500 years, the original “stone circles” have no doors or entrances while most are connected by an expansive network of mysterious channels that are often misinterpreted as “roads” by some historians. Furthermore, this massive connected grid of circular ruins are immersed in a seemingly never-ending expanse of ancient agricultural terraces that surround the structures and seem to be an extension of the ruins. It is a great tragedy that countless ruins have been destroyed by human development and industry through sheer ignorance but some farmers and forestry companies have started to protect a small number of these ruin as they recognise their importance in human history.

Adam’s Calendar is the flagship among these ruins. This spectacular ancient site is aligned with the N,S,E,W cardinal points of planet Earth, solstices and equinoxes. It is still accurate as a calendar by following the shadow of the setting sun, which is cast by the taller central monolith onto the flat calendar stone beside it. It has been dated with relative certainty to at least 75,000 years of age based on a number of scientific evaluations.

The calendar was re-discovered by Johan Heine in 2003 and named by Michael Tellinger as Adam’s Calendar because it is possibly the oldest structure on Earth that is linked to human origins. It has however been known by African elders, indigenous knowledge keepers and Shaman as “The Birthplace of The Sun”, or “Inzalo y’Langa” where humanity was created by the gods.

From a geological perspective, Adam’s Calendar presents us with undeniable geophysical evidence that our planet has undergone a crustal shift, or crustal displacement at some turbulent time in our past. This is when the north-south axis of the planet actually moves to a different position. This was proposed in the work of Charles Hapgood in the 1950s, which was strongly supported by Albert Einstein, suggesting that the Earth’s crust shifts from time to time, moving the polar axis of the planet with it.

Adam’s Calendar also presents the first tangible evidence of consciousness among the earliest humans in the ‘Cradle of Humankind’ while some of the tools suggest that they had a much better understanding of the laws of nature than we have today. The site is built along the same longitudinal line as Great Zimbabwe and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, suggesting a connection between those ancient civilisation and the builders of all three of these sites.

The stone ruins of southern Africa present us with a very exciting missing piece of the puzzle regarding the murky origins of humankind and possibly point us in the right direction to discover the true cradle of humankind.

Adam’s Calendar: This is possibly the only example of a functional, mostly in-tact monolithic stone calendar in the world. The founder of Adam’s Calendar, Johan Heine, observes as the shadow of the setting sun on the summer solstice 21 Dec. As the sun sets the shadow slides off the edge – only to resume its path back to the opposite edge where it stops on the winter solstice, 21 June.

Ubuntu Tree

Written by

Nokuphila Ubuntu TreeUbuntu Tree - Nokuphila

'Unabantu Nokuphila'- in Xhosa "Nokuphila" means "the mother of health" and "Unabantu" is "where the people come together" - The 'Ubuntu Tree' is therefore the "Place of the Healing Mother where the people gather for health & wellness "

Over 400 years ago, a special wild fig (ficus carica) tree was planted in what is now Kloof Street. It marked along with its neighbour tree sisters the borderline of the Camissa-fed Weltevreden dam of Cape Town, where residents and visitors from afar would gather to collect their fresh water, and socialise under the shade of what came to be known as "Unabantu Nokuphila" the tAll-loving One where healing flows." Today it continues to receive and refresh friends and visitors, and support and inspires its Ubuntu Wellness Centre custodians at the Cape Town Medi-Spa.

OUR CUSTODIANSHIP AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR: Boesmans Gat / Bushmans Hole: This sacred site is known as the "Sacred Womb of the Earth Mother". It lies on a private game farm Mt. Carmel, one and a half hours from Kimberley. Over the past decade we have been taking spiritual journeys to visit this very sacred place. We have spoken over the years with the owner about supporting a Community Custodianship Project, where we will support the local community, by finding out what their needs, and vision are for the protection of their ancestral sacred site. We will also help fund and support training of the locals who can safely and respectfully guide people into the Sacred Womb. We have spoken to some of the local heads of the community and they have shown great interest in the initiative. We need your help to make this a reality for all concerned!

If you would like to support and sponsor this Community Custodian Guides training, please go to our Donation page link here.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH: Boesmans Gat / Bushmans Hole.  Boesmansgat, also known in English as "Bushman's Hole", is believed to be the third-deepest submerged freshwater cave (or sinkhole) in the world, approximately 270 meters (886 feet) deep. It is located in the Northern Cape province of South AfricaBoesmansgat was believed to be first explored by amateur cave diver Mike Rathbourne in 1977.

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE & INTERPRETATION - Boesmans Gat / Bushmans Hol: Archaeoastronomical research by Dean Liprini : As one descends into the womb Dean discovered a Small Phallic Male Stone overlooking the entrance to the womb the shadow of the Male Stone, cast by the Equinox Sunset passes right into the centre of the Pool and into the sunken cave recess.  Whenever entering this Sacred site one needs to approach with Great humility and respect, it is a very powerful space.

It was here that it was said one of the last Bushman / san families being chased by settlers shooting at them, ran to the edge of the Sacred Womb of the Earth Mother, strapping her young child tightly to her, turned and jumped into the womb, the husband turned and shouted, you will never kill us, we will go back to our Great Mother and he too jumped in to his death or was it to his re-birth?

Table Mountain, according to the Khoi & the San, is often seen magestically covered by a blanket of clouds, and was known as Hu-!Gais meaning "veiled in clouds", and seen as a Sacred & Spiritual Mountain covered by the Spirit of their All Mighty Supreme God known as Tsui//Goab "he gives rain, he makes the clouds, he lives in the clouds, and he makes our cows & our sheep fruitful": T.Haan 1881.

Table Mountain was also known as Hoerikwaggo "Mountain in the sea".Lions Head Table Mt sunset 2 01-06.07

Table Mountain according to African legend:  Tixo, God of the Sun, and Djobela, the One Eyed Earth Goddess conceived Qamata, who created the world.  The Great Sea Dragon, Nkanyamba was so jealous that he fought & wounded Qamata, trying to stop him creating dry land.  But the Earth Mother, Djobela, came to Qamata's aid, creating four mighty Giants to guard the corners of the Earth.... After many battles with the Sea Dragon the Giants were mortally wounded.  Before they died they asked the Earth Mother to turn them into Mountains, so that even in death they could guard the Earth.  And so the Greatest Giant of All, Umlindi Wemingizimu became Table Mountain, the Watcher of the South.

OUR CUSTODIANSHIP AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR: BUSHMANS KLOOF

We have run a number of Spiritual and Sacred Journey's to the Bushmans Kloof, where we have befriended the owners of the Serville Trail and have done some research on the Rock Art trail there.  Our initiative here is to further assist the community in realizing their role as custodians, developing and helping with training more Rock Art guides and creating a platform for historic re-inactments, workshops and events that showcase the life ways and spiritual beliefs of the early stone age peoples and the San Bushman.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH - BUSHMANS KLOOF: Coming soon

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE AND INTERPRETATION - BUSHMANS KLOOF

This was a special place that was on the migratory path of the elephants and other grazing animals moving from the West Coast to the East Coast.  As the seasons changed so the animals moved to areas that provided better browsing and grazing, following passage ways that contained water and food along the way. Bushman's Kloof is one of these magical places filled with abundance of water and food for the ancient people who lived deeply with the Nature and Spirit  that surrounds and enshrines these sacred caves and shelters. It was here that the San peoples would have spent time in ceremony and dance, as is shared in their rock paintings, and where the Shamans would go into trance and shift into different levels and dimensions of consciousness, communicating with the spirit of their ancestors, through and into the cosmic star realms and star beings, deep into the womb and inner world of Mother Earth.

OUR CUSTODIANSHIP AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR: The Great Motherstone, Llandudno

The SSFSA are planning a signage intiative at this site to bring public awareness to the sacredness of this site.  We are aiming to create jobs by training custodians & guides from the Hout Bay community nearby, to help facilitate groups visiting this important site, to ensure a "Tread Lightly" conciousness and appropriate protocols are maintained.  We have already approached the Hout Bay Hangberg community & met with the local Koi leaders, and this discussion is ongoing.  One of these was John Roberts (who sadly passed away in the Oct 2012 Hout Bay cruise boat tragedy), but out of this terrible accident we have met his friends, Brent Thomas and Sharlene Botha, who are now officially the first Community Custodian Guides on this program.

Project Progress Report:  Wednesday 2nd December 2012 - Brent Thomas joined the SSFSA on his 3rd training hike.  We took a group of 4 to the Suikerbossie Watchman's Cave & Equinox Rocks.  Brent has expressed a specific interest in helping with the School Awareness project which we launch in Feb 2013, where we will do a lecture tour of local schools to create awareness.

Logies Rocks Sacred Site Cape Town 05-12-2012 36ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH: Logies Rocks, Llandudno

The Logies Rock Shelter in Llandudno was researched by archaeologists.  Amongst their findings were red ochre, ochre stained grinding stone, pottery & beads, and shell middens.  One can see these shell middens outside the cave entrances.  The smoothness of the granite cave floor indicates the cave was used by many people over hundreds and thousands of years.

Logies Rocks Sacred Site Cape Town 05-12-2012 32SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE & INTERPRETATION - The Great Motherstone, Logies Rocks, Llandudno

Archaeoastronomical research by Dean Liprini shows that the great Motherstone, which is near the cave, is the largest standing monolithic stone on this mini peninsula of Logies Rocks.  The Motherstone has been so named due to it's shape, seen as a diamond lozenge when looking at it from west to east position.  The diamond shape is an ancient symbol of the female reproductive area.  There is a seam of white quartz that winds around the Motherstone, anchoring into a blackened nadis / bellybutton like energy point, representing the umbilical chord and fertility aspects of the Motherstone.  When viewed from the north to south direction, the great Motherstone appears to be a huge breast, complete with nipplecap, reinforcing the fertility status of this site.  The fact that red ochre was in use, confirms that the ancient people were invoved in ceremony at this important site.  The top of the Motherstone is lit by the first rays of the Summer Solstice sun rise, passing through the gateway between Little Lions Head & the south west corner of Table Mountain. Tsodilo Hills Serpent Cave, Botswana

Written by

Tsodilo Hills Botswana

OUR CUSTODIANSHIP AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR: Tsodilo Hills Serpent Cave

We have run sacred journeys to this ancient sacred Mountain Tsodilo Hills, met with the communities and have befriended the guides. we are acting as a watchman as developments start to happen and are communicating to the local people and decendents of the ancestral Bushman San people that they need to be involved with these developments and be one of the key players in the decision making. Ensuring that they are fully and fairly invoved with the process.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH - Tsodilo Hills Serpent Cave: More coming soon There are hundreds of rock art sites adourning the Tsodilo Hills and recently an archeologist escavated in the Serpent cave unearthing stone artifacts and spearheads dating back 70 000yrs making it one of the oldest spiritual gathering sites in the world.

Tsodilo Hills Botswana Serpent CaveSPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE AND INTERPRETATION - Tsodilo Hills Serpent CaveIt is said by Baba Credo mutwa who did ceremony here when he was very young that the serpent a Great Rock Shaped Python (that appears to have scales scraped out by shamans) was a  representation of the Milky way a conduit to the star realms and beings...where prayers were asked by pilgrims uttered to the serpent to bring them plenty of food for their families and keep them safe and bear them healthy children.

This is one of the earliest know sacred sites, this Serpent cave said to be a sacred gathering place for over 70 000 years.

From Sheila Coulson of the University of Oslo - Archaeology research:
"A startling discovery of 70,000-year-old artifacts and a python's head carved of stone appears to represent the first known human rituals.

Scientists had thought human intelligence had not evolved the capacity to perform group rituals until perhaps 40,000 years ago.

But inside a cave in remote hills in Kalahari Desert of Botswana, archeologists found the stone snake [image] that was carved long ago. It is as tall as a man and 20 feet long.  "You could see the mouth and eyes of the snake. It looked like a real python," said Sheila Coulson of the University of Oslo. "The play of sunlight over the indentations gave them the appearance of snake skin. At night, the firelight gave one the feeling that the snake was actually moving."

The bigger surprise: More significant, when Coulson and her colleagues dug a test pit near they stone figure, they found spearheads made of stone that had to have been brought to the cave from hundreds of miles away [image]. The spearheads were burned in what only could be described as some sort of ritual, the scientists conclude.

"Stone age people took these colorful spearheads, brought them to the cave, and finished carving them there," Coulson said today. "Only the red spearheads were burned. It was a ritual destruction of artifacts. There was no sign of normal habitation. No ordinary tools were found at the site."

The discovery was made in a remote region of Botswana called Tsodilo Hills, the only uplifted area for miles around. It is known to modern Sanpeople as the "Mountains of the Gods" and the "Rock that Whispers." Their legend has it that mankind descended from the python, and the ancient, arid streambeds around the hills are said to have been created by the python as it circled the hills in its ceaseless search for water.

That legend made the discovery of the stone python all the more amazing.

"Our find means that humans were more organized and had the capacity for abstract thinking at a much earlier point in history than we have previously assumed," Coulson said. "All of the indications suggest that Tsodilo has been known to mankind for almost 100,000 years as a very special place in the pre-historic landscape."

Tsodilo Hills Serpent Cave Botswana Two RhinoYet another surprise: The scientists found a secret chamber behind the python carving. Worn areas indicate it's been used over the years.

"The shaman, who is still a very important person in San culture, could have kept himself hidden in that secret chamber," Coulson explained. "He would have had a good view of the inside of the cave while remaining hidden himself. When he spoke from his hiding place, it could have seemed as if the voice came from the snake itself. The shaman would have been able to control everything. It was perfect.”

The shaman could also have made himself disappear from the chamber by crawling out onto the hillside through a small shaft, the scientists found.

Paintings in the cave appear to support part of modern San mythology.

While cave paintings are common in the Tsodilo Hills, inside the python cave there are just two small paintings, of an elephant and a giraffe. The images were painted at the exact spot where water runs down the wall.

One San story has the python falling into water, unable to get out. It's saved by the giraffe. The elephant, with its long trunk, is often a metaphor for the python in San mythology.

"In the cave, we find only the San people’s three most important animals: the python, the elephant, and the giraffe," Coulson said. "That is unusual. This would appear to be a very special place. They did not burn the spearheads by chance. They brought them from hundreds of kilometers away and intentionally burned them. So many pieces of the puzzle fit together here. It has to represent a ritual."

Die Oog, Kuruman area, Northern Cape

Written by

Die Oog (The Eye), near Kuruman in the Northern Cape, is the largest fresh water spring in the southern hemisphere, the locals claim it has healing properties.

OUR CUSTODIANSHIP AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR: Die Oog  We have run many tours to this special place set on the edge of the Kalahari Desert and home to many displaced bushman San Communities. We have made contact with some of these communities in and around Kuruman the town that is custodian of this sacred spring. It is also the home of Baba Credo Mutwa and Virginia his wife.  We help facilitate groups to visit and share with baba and Virginia, we are looking at helping train Guides to further facillitate group tours to this Sacred Spring and the other surrounding Sacred Sites, like Matulamela (a sacred mountain and shelter containing San Rock Art).

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH - Die Oog: More coming soon Research shows that Moffit spent time here and this was where the first bible in South Africa was printed.  You can still visit the Moffit Mission in this area, and see relics from days gone by. The Rock art research from this area will be uploaded shortly.

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE AND INTERPRETATION - Die OogThe Eye is said to be the largest fresh water spring in the southern hemisphere, and is claimed by the locals to have healing properties. For the San Bushman ancient people this must have been a great symbol of abundance finding so much cool, refreshing, clean and revitalising water in such a dry and hot area.  Water is used to Purify and as a medium to transform, metamorphose ....a place of REBIRTHING.  The Eye also is a symbol of the Spirit, a place of Primordial Water.

OUR CUSTODIANSHIP AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FOR: PEERS CAVE (Burial Cave) & TUNNEL CAVE (Ascension Cave)

The Sacred Site Foundation of Southern Africa has submitted a proposal to Table Mountain National Park c/o SANParks to help create a Community Custodianship Initiative for the Safe Guarding of this public space Sacred Site. We have made in roads to the surrounding communities of Kalk Bay and Ocean View, met with some Elders and found individuals interested in being trained as guides and custodians of Peers Cave.

Crystal Cave SSSS Salute to the sun 21-12.05SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE AND INTERPRETATION: PEERS (Burial) CAVE, Sun Valley: This is a GREAT MOTHER CAVE, a sacred sanctuary chosen for shelter by many ancient people for thousands of years.  It is one of the most southern Rock Art Sites in the whole of Africa.  It was also a sacred burial ground where more than 14 human skeletons were very unceremonially removed in the early 1920's. It is, like all caves a giant womb, that could shelter more than 100 people from danger and bad weather. It is also seen to be guarded or watched over by two great stone guardians, who's eyes gaze vertically upward to the Mid-Heaven and horizontally to the Earth Plane, uniting the Heavenly and Earthly planes at this Sacred Cave. This cave is found in a large female earth energy flowing southwards out the Silvermine Valley, southwards down the Cape Peninsula towards Cape Point. Archaeoastronomy Research for this cave is discussed more by Dean Liprini in his book "Pathways of the Sun - Unveiling the Mysteries of Table Mountain and Beyond".

Crystal Cave SSSS Debs Thulani smudging 21-12.05TUNNEL(Ascension)CAVE: is another Sacred Cave that symbolises the Female / Mother in the form of a Great Birthing Canal 50ft long by 27ft wide, formed in Metamophic Crystalised Quartzitic Sandstone = the Crystal Tunnel - Cave of Ascension.

This cave has been divinely orientated perfectly to center on the setting sun on the day of Great Light, the Summer Solstice. This Ascension Cave becomes a Sacred Earth Temple Site that marks to the Summer solstice of the most Southerly Sunset on the continent of Africa, the Longet Day and turning point of the Sun. On this day the Father Sun is seen to impregnate the womb of the Mother through this sacred birthing canal / tunnel.  This is a sacred space that one feels one's spirit and soul can take off, be lifted, ascended to the light, hence the name Ascension Cave.

Every year on the Summer solstice the Sacred Site Foundation of Southern Africa hosts a ceremonial gathering here in this cave, at which all are welcome.  See the dates & times of tours to this very special Sacred Cave, regular tours on our EVENTS page.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH: Cathederal Rock, Keurboomstrand, Garden Route

The Cathederal Rock site is a burial site & is officially recorded as the deepest dated Shell Midden in the world.  This site has been researched by archaeologists.  Amongst their findings were red ochre, ochre stained grinding stone, pottery & beads, and shell middens.  One can see these shell middens outside the cave entrances.

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE & INTERPRETATION - Cathederal Rock, Keurboomstrand, Garden Route

Cathederal Rock Keurboomstrand Sacred Site 6Archaeoastronomical research by Dean Liprini shows that the Cathederal Rock (Arch Rock) is a massive holed stone which would have had spiritual significance & seen to hold magical properties by the ancient people living in this area from prehistoric times.  The Cathederal Rock represents the female birth canal and the central hole faces perfectly due North & South, so that it captures the Sun & the Moon allignment at midday.  When the light of the midday sun or the moonlight passes through the hole, it reflects down in the archway that is often filled with sea water, and can be seen as a "seed of light" entering the womb of the Mother and the primal womb & waters of the ocean.Cathederal Rock Keurboomstrand Sacred Site 8
